“The human inability to notice plants in one's everyday life is known as plant blindness. When we do notice nature, we often ignore plants that don’t vie for our attention. I am attempting to recapture a moment of awakening and reconnection to these plants. I focus on the moments when familiar plants can appear alien, like quavering poppy pods, or surprising, as with pale petals reflecting moonlight in darkness. The works depicted in this book are all small enough that I could hold them in my hands while painting. I want to invite an act of intimacy into my painting: sometimes by shrinking, you can see the larger world more clearly.”
